The National Museum of Beirut is the main archeological museum in Lebanon. The collection started after World War I, and the museum was officially opened in 1942. The collection includes approximately 100,000 objects, most of which are antiquities and medieval finds from excavations undertaken by the Directorate General of Antiquities. About 1,300 artifacts are exhibited, and date from prehistoric times to the medieval Mamluk period.

During the 1975 Lebanese Civil War, the museum stood on the front line that separated the warring factions and the building and its collection suffered extensive damage, although most of the artifacts were saved through last-minute pre-emptive measures.

The National Library of Jordan is attached to the Ministry of Culture and works towards the protection and preservation of Jordan’s cultural heritage, with the aim to serve researchers and scholars interested in the cultural and intellectual aspects of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan.
The National Library was created in 1994 from the merger of the Center for Documents and Documentation and the Department of the National Library, itself having replaced the Department of Libraries and National Documents founded in 1977.
The Documents and Photograph Archiving Section within the National Library holds a collection of around 10,000 photos comprised of 17 private collections from the 1860s to the present day, mostly donations. The collections cover primarily Egypt, Palestine, Syria and mostly Jordan; they include Film-based negatives, digital files, positives, and Black and White and color prints.

The National Archives and Library of Iran is Iran’s largest research center, housed in a extensive complex in Haqqani and Mirdamad in Tehran, as well as a number of branches around Tehran. The Archives also have satellite branches in provincial cities. The Archives and Library hold a vast number of textual and visual sources, including over 1.7 million books, in addition to over one million dissertations, manuscripts, photographs, and other documents.

The National Archives of Iran is the main official authority responsible for the collection, preservation, processing, and information dissemination of documents of national and historical importance. Its photograph collection consists of over 32,000 photographs ranging from glass plate negatives and positives, positive prints and black and white images.

The collection is available for researchers.

The photograph collection of the Ministry of Tourism was established for the promotion of tourism in Lebanon. It mainly dates from the 1940s until the present day, but also includes photographs from the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century. The collection includes more than 12,000 photographs, and is composed of six collections authored by Lebanese and International photographers. The Library was created in 1967, renovated in 1993 and officially inaugurated in 1997.
In 2003, under Director General Mrs. Nada Sardouk, the collection was restored, documented, digitized, and made available to the public. The collection is accessible upon request.

To achieve its goals, it formulates and implements all policies concerned with antiquities; issues guidelines and permits for the excavation, restoration, conservation, documentation, and study of sites and monuments; and manages a country-wide system of antiquities museums. In addition, it oversees the publication of journals and books on archaeology and cultural heritage, and finances its own archaeological excavation, documentation, and conservation projects. The Ministry of Antiquities is responsible for the protection of the rich legacy of all of Egypt’s eras, from prehistory through the Pharaonic, Greco-Roman, Coptic, and Islamic periods and into the modern age. Following 23 July Revolution (1952), all photographs of the Egyptian Royal family of Mohamed Ali were collected from the palaces and stored because it was against the principles and thoughts of the Revolution at the that time. Today, the collection is stored in the Abdeen Palace for members of the royal family. When the institution was founded, it began to build a photograph archive, as an important part in a press institution, since they had no old photographs. Thus, they purchased old photographs from old institutions such Al-Ahram, which have the largest archive in Egypt and old photographs from professional former presidential photographers. They held several exhibitions generally for the photographs and published a photography book. The collection is available only for publishing in the newspaper, the website, and all publications. It is not open for the public, except for the researchers with permission from the institution. The photograph collection of ‘Maison de l’image’ was created in 2011, and primarily consists of photographs related to “L’École de Tunis”. The archive contains around 3,500 images and includes film-based negatives, positives, Black and White and color images, in addition to digital files. Photos were acquired by deposit and the collection is still expanding. The collection is partially catalogued on a database, which is accessible for researchers and students interested in Tunisian Art History.

Koç University Suna Kıraç Library was founded in 1993 as a non-profit private university in Istanbul. Its recently established library and photo-archive was created after the donation of the late Turkish-American art historian Esin Atil (1938- ) and ethnographer Josephine Powell (1919-2007). The library’s archive includes rare books and manuscripts collections in addition to a photographic collection of more than 50,000 images of various types, such as film-based negatives, slides, prints as well as digital files, all acquired by donation and dating mostly from the 1960s. The collection of slides date from 1960s to 2000s and vary in size, 5×4 and 5×6. In addition to this, printed photographs are also featured, illustrating Koç’s University history since its foundation. The collection is still expanding and is partially digitzed and catalogued on a database, and a portion is accessible online.
Koç’s University library is currently working on digitizing the rich and recently acquired collection, the Hittite collection, which will appear online soon.
