The first edition of MEPPI took place in Beirut in January 2009. Institutions from Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria participated in nine days of workshops animated by Nora Kennedy (Metropolitan Museum of Art) and Debra Hess-Norris (University of Delaware).
