13 participants from the MEPPI alumni cohort attended the second Environment, Exhibition and Storage of Photographs workshop, an advanced workshop part of MEPPI Phase II. The workshop took place at the Bibliothèque Nationale du Royaume du Maroc on 10-21 October 2016.

MEPPI Phase II workshops include a series of two Environment, Exhibition and Storage of Photographs, and three Digitization of Photographs workshops offered between the second half of 2015, through early 2017. Both workshops build upon the foundation of information and skills acquired by participants during their first MEPPI course, letting them expand their knowledge in topics fundamental to the preservation of their institutions’ photograph collections.

The Environment, Exhibition and Storage of Photographs provided additional training and experience in preventive conservation, with a particular emphasis on the storage and exhibition of photographs. Topics covered were environmental impacts on photographs; condition assessments; environmental monitoring and control options; selecting and creating enclosures; cold storage; planning a small storage facility, preservation concerns of exhibition; concerns of exhibition, packing and shipping, lighting; mold management.

Workshop teaching involved lectures, case studies, practical exercises, discussions and visits to photograph collections.

Sessions were lead by instructors Debra H.Norris, Nora Kennedy, Bertrand Lavédrine, Tram Vo and teaching assistant Maha Ahmed.

18 participants from the MEPPI alumni cohort attended the first and second Digitization of Photographs workshops, both advanced workshops part of MEPPI Phase II. The two four-day workshops took place, back to back, at the Arab Image Foundation on 10-13 May, and then on 16-19 May.

MEPPI Phase II workshops include a series of two Environment, Exhibition and Storage of Photographs, and three Digitization of Photographs workshops offered between the second half of 2015, through early 2017. Both workshops build upon the foundation of information and skills acquired by participants during their first MEPPI course, letting them expand their knowledge in topics fundamental to the preservation of their institutions’ photograph collections.

Topics covered included understanding quality issues of digital reproductions; quality control and image processing; choosing and evaluating equipment; and file and metadata management. The workshop teaching includes lectures and practical work sessions. The sessions were led by Klaus Pollmeier, and teaching assistant Charbel Saad.
