Debra Hess Noris and Nora Kennedy will be joined by Dr Hisham Khatib to explore photography and the challenges faced in the preservation and display of photographs. What should collectors and conservators be aware of? How can one ensure these works will be passed along to future generations? What are some of the issues involved in showing contemporary images in museum settings? The speakers will each address those topics and the floor will be open for questions and contributions from audience members. The evening will be of interest to collectors, photographers, curators, conservators, and anyone with family photograph collections.

Nora Kennedy is the Sherman Fairchild Conservator of Photographs at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City where she established a lab devoted to the conservation of photographs. She has worked on many photography exhibitions and continues to expand the Museum’s initiatives in education and research.

Making the Most of Online Conservation Resources

Making the Most of Online Conservation Resources

At the American Institute for Conservation’s 41st Annual Meeting in Indianapolis, the Emerging Conservation Professionals Network (ECPN) explored how conservators use online resources in a poster titled “The Art Con<server>: How conservation professionals make use of online resources.” The poster was based largely on a survey sent to AIC members in March 2013.

The survey was created by ECPN in consultation with AIC’s Publications Committee and featured 26 questions, three of which were open-ended and allowed participants to write in their own responses. The results were revealing and invite thoughtful consideration. The Internet has changed and continues to influence how we research, access, and share information. As content creators and researchers, how can we develop the most valuable resources and encourage the best research practices?

MEPPI alumnus The Fouad Debbas Collection exhibits at the Beirut Photo Fair

During this September's Beirut Photo Fair, alongside contemporary photographic works, an exhibition of a selection of artifacts, prints and reproductions from The Fouad Debbas Collection (a MEPPI alumnus) was also offered to visitors. It was an important chance for the Lebanese gallery-goers to connect with their heritage: not only photographic heritage but also architectural heritage, as several pieces depicted Beirut as it was over a century ago, almost unrecognisable in scale from the city it has become.

MIDDLE EAST PHOTOGRAPH PRESERVATION INITIATIVE

MEPPI Amman 2014 – Course announcement

APPLICATIONS ARE CURRENTLY BEING ACCEPTED for MEPPI Amman 2014

Workshop date: 20-28 January 2014
Workshop venue: National Library of Jordan in Amman
Distance mentoring: February to September 2014
Follow-up meeting: Fall 2014

Update: The deadline for applications has now passed.

The MEPPI Initiative
The Arab Image Foundation, the Art Conservation Department at the University of Delaware, The Metropolitan
Museum of Art and the Getty Conservation Institute are partners in the Middle East Photograph Preservation
Initiative (MEPPI), a strategic initiative to promote the preservation and awareness of photograph collections in
the broad Middle East, from North Africa and the Arab Peninsula through Western Asia. Portions of this project are
supported by a generous grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
The initiative has three interconnected components.

MEPPI Courses
MEPPI courses are designed to provide basic theoretical and practical training in the care of a broad range of photographic
materials found in the collections of museums, libraries, archives and other repositories. The courses deliver learning and
hands-on experience in both classroom and workplace settings. They carefully combine theoretical and practical training
to inspire a deeper understanding of photographic materials and processes, their deterioration mechanisms, and
appropriate strategies for their long-term preservation. International representation among course participants fosters the
exchange of ideas, philosophies, and preservation techniques, and strengthens connections between professionals for
continued future interactions. MEPPI has trained over 30 collections keepers to date through courses in Beirut (2011) and
Abu Dhabi (2012). MEPPI Amman 2014 will be the final course in this series.
